Correlation of Adult Learners
In learning about adult learning, I arrived to the
conclusion that adults need diverse approaches to learning as much students do.
As I dabble In facilitating learning environments for adults, what stands out
the most is there is a greater “learning by doing” when working with adults. I
feel there is a greater sense to keep a balance learning environment of andragogy
and pedagogy. Whereas, I can teach a fully guided lesson within a k-12 scope
and be ok within a learning segment. I’ve learned adults need opportunities to
explore their own desires of diverse context to grow.
In a way, my thinking has changed in that I feel we are
missing a big piece of learning and growing for our teachers. Most of what we
are doing is being forced for the sake of meeting benchmarks for a teacher
evaluation of which we are supposed to grow. However in my eyes, we, teachers,
are not necessarily growing vertically, but horizontally. We should be growing
in leadership, diverse skills, culturally responsiveness, etc. However, we are
subjected to sticking with trying do something better than what we did the year
before. We are given the strategies rather than explore or even cultivate a new
strategy that works for them. In my
eyes, the system keeps placing teachers on a conveyor belt. The very system
that keeps our children on conveyor belts.
